Foxy Brown
Foxy Brown (not the same as a similarly entitled reggae musician) was
born Inga Marchand, September 6, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. The
fifteen year-old girl of mixed Asian and African-American descent, Inga
won a talent contest which gave her a freeroll into a freestyle
performance on stage. By now, Inga was calling herself Foxy Brown,
after a Pam Grier character in a blaxploitation film. Producers working
on LL Cool J's "Mr. Smith" album, invited the youngster to add her rap
to the single, "I Shot Ya." When the single became a surprise hit, Foxy
Brown was asked to return to work. She contributed to other singles
throughout 1996, after which she signed to Def Jam (they had won the
bidding war to sign her) and soon after joined The Firm with AZ, Nas,
and Cormega. The following year, 1997, saw the release of her debut
album, "Ill Na Na," produced by Trackmasters and contained contributions
from Kid Capri, Blackstreet, Method Man, and Jay-Z. It spawned a hit
single, "I'll Be," which featured Jay-Z, who was to become her mentor.
Despite mixed reviews, the album reached seventh on the charts in its
first week with strong sales. The lyrics were criticized for their
explicit nature, a result of contributions from the promoters.
At the same time, an equally explicit rapper from Brooklyn, Lil' Kim, childhood friends who had imagined what success as rap superstars could bring. In the same way that orchestrated conflict between wrestlers and boxers at a weigh-in, can produce big sales at the cash register, the fans fell for the hype of the promotion game conflict. Later that year, Foxy Brown and Dru Hill released a single from the "How To Be a Player" soundtrack that was an instant success, "Big Bad Mama." In 1999, Foxy's "Chyna Girl," album became the first ever female rap album to hit the Billboard 200 Album chart at Number #1. It contained the hit single "Hot Spot," and was paired with a video that showcased Foxy's talent and man appeal. Her 2001 album, "Broken Silence" contained another hit single, "Candy." The single, "Oh Yeah," featured a Jamaican artist, Spragga Benz, whom Foxy would eventually marry. 15hqqh. ![]() ![]()
